The 3 R’s of Golf Performance

The 3 R’s is a way I to treat injured and dysfunctional golfers.

This was taught to me by the SFMA, which is an assessment system to help diagnose the causes of someone’s pain.

The general principle is that the root cause of pain is not coming from where the pain is felt, the cause is coming from somewhere else so we use this and other assessments to break things up.

Anyway, the whole point of it is, if we’re trying to not focus on the area of pain, and are focusing on an area of restriction that could have ended up causing the pain, then we use the following simple framework.

So the first R is reset, which would be the manual treatment, soft tissue treatment etc…

The second R is reinforce, and we are reinforcing the work we have done in the session (corrective exercise) etc.

And finally, the third R which is reload, the new pattern and range of motion etc, to get the desired long term target…

Very simple system but with a lot of moving parts.

Now, what I did with the fitness side of Unbreakable Golfers and the Golfmob was to take that same setup and try and get someone to get the range of motion, the movement, and the body working in a certain way.

Tight and inflexible, no problem,

Overweight and sedation with food, no problem,

Not hitting the ball as far as you would like, no problem,

Reset the problem patterns in the mind, body and how it is limiting how far a golfer can hit a golf ball…

Reinforce them with a specific, daily plan that would increase the range of motion and flexibility,

Reduce weight and teach golfers to eat better and,

Increase how far the golfer can hit the ball further without swinging out of his shoes.

Reload the golfer with new, patterns, behaviours and habits that allow better all-round play and living.

Apply it to the mind, and apply it to food, and apply it to your physical golf swing…

Basically, build a very complex system, and then make it as simple as possible to take action and stop procrastinating (which is what unbreakable golfers does for you) and make it as simple as possible.

The whole point of it is you should be able to do it daily.

It’s not easy. (nothing worth having is) and at times it can feel extremely hard, it takes commitment, and most people will want to give up.

However, people that are driven, will find the consistency to do this.

Because they want to get better as they get older, not worse…

Meaning Making Golfing Machines.

The first time I think I heard this was on it in an old Tony Robbins book,

it's this concept that your brain and the way you think about everything, is based around what you think things mean.

So anything that we do in day to day life, our brain interprets that information and then makes meaning from it.

So, even if we strategically think about it, or subconsciously think about it,

we decide what it all means to us and what we think is possible for us.

I think the story from Tony Robbins was of a young baby that's crawling on the sofa and then falls off the sofa and hurts itself.

They might make the meaning subconsciously, that the sofa is the problem and the meaning that the sofa is what scary and the problem that what gets you hurt and not falling.

In your body, your mind everything that you're doing, you're always interpreting this information and you're getting in a position that you're starting to make meaning from everything.

Now you are doing this all the time.

It doesn't mean these things are all negative Some things are positive, you will do something and you will get meaning from that, your mind will make the meaning from it.

And it will be a positive effect on what you're doing moving forward.

But what we want to do is we want to find out if there is a reason or a story that's stopping you from taking action, or worse, stopping you from making the progress that you desire and want. We need to understand the story and the meaning behind that story and how that is stopping you from moving forward. So, take this one for me,

There will be things that I do.

And I'll think "people don't want that. They don't need that" forgetting that I've been doing this stuff now for nearly 10 years.

My mind has to go back to where I was 11 years ago, and what I needed and what I wish I had for me to be able to get better.

And that's what unbreakable golfers is at the end of the day, it is what I wished I had 11 years ago.

What I would have invested time and effort into before getting into personal development, Golf performance, fitness and treatment.

This is what I wished I had an idea and some tools that work.

And here is where you need to get.

So, let's get clear. You are a meaning-making machine, everything that you do is backed up by the stories, and what you think those stories mean.

If you struggle to get the results that you are going after or staying committed to targets that you've set, every year, every 90 days and ones that you may have been setting for a very long time.

Then it's because there's a story in your head, that's stopping you from taking that action you need to.

The best way we do that is we challenge your stories, we get clear on what we want, and we go after it.

Structure Creates Freedom.

This is something that got taught to me a long while ago.

And it still amazes me how the more I implement it, With new as well as old ideas then more I get out of it.

Those that have a system to follow have results that are off the charts.

Take your phone or your computer.

You have an operating system that allows you to do everything you need it to do, but try and put something in place, that doesn't fit well with that operating system, (a program, or app or anything) and what you have is

Struggle, confusion and potentially break down.

This is no different from your body,

your mind and anything else that you apply to your life.

If the operating system that you are trying to use does not work with the new idea or plan that you're trying to achieve, then all you have is,

struggle, confusion and break down.

Most people, when it comes to their body, whether it be pain, tightness, weakness or in their mind, be it anger, distraction or sedation, are trying to put something new, on an old operating system

And it doesn't matter where the information comes from, be it YouTube, Facebook or advice from others, when it is being made to fit an old operating system that doesn't like it will not work correctly.

One of the best ways that you can get your phone working with the newest apps, your computer working with the newest programmes, or your body and mind working with the results you want is to start using an operating system that works.

This could be that you decided to go on a specific diet training plan or meditation retreat.

That allows you to use these operating systems, create new operating systems, or you can just keep forcing yourself until you get to the point that you no longer rely on your old version, old apps, old operating systems.

However, how do you know which one works best?

The best thing that you can do is change the way that you're thinking about how you get results, but use how you have always got results to continue to get the results you want.

Basically, you take your current phone (body) and update the software(your thinking) so that you can do new cool stuff that wasn't possible before (Your desired results that you set all the time but still can't achieve).

Most people do it by modelling, someone that's like them, that has got the results they want.

Another way is to just randomly try different ideas based on what you like.

This is more trial and error, but you're more likely to find something that works. Eventually...

The fact is, if you continue to get the same results, year in, year out in your body, then it's probably that you're lying to yourself and don't really think that you are willing to put the work in required or

its the operating system, the way you think about the actions you take IS NOT WORKING FOR YOU..

The more stressed we are about trying to change things, the more it leaks over into the other areas of our life.

Stress with something you're doing at work will leak over to your body and the food you eat.

Stress with your food and your worry it will leak over to your energy and how you act around your family.

Stressed around your family, and you'll feel guilty about the time you need to be away to get what you want.

All caused by the way you currently operate.

The fact is if you just change your operating system to one that not only is simple and gets the results you want, but you can actually course correct when things aren't working.

What I use is Fairway 4...

4 simple frames of reference that I not only teach and train but also live by.

These four pillars hold up any target, goal or result like the foundations of a building.

Systems allow someone to not only consume the information they're trying to learn but see how and where to implement it and most importantly see what they are missing.

It might seem too simple.

Or that might be the excuse for not having any excuses to get the results you want.

Sleepy food

There is nothing like a lack of sleep is there.

Waking up and already exhausted, tired, irritable.

With this everything seems like it's a nightmare or more stress then it needs to be.

From this worn-out state, you want to reach for the worst possible food and as much coffee as you can get your hands on.

And this is just to get going even though the days just started, you're already thinking about the day finishing.

Everyone at some point has been through the pain of not having enough sleep and will allow their body (at some point) to catch up.

However, the same feelings can be brought about by eating foods that steal your energy, motivation, focus and clarity, but because it's at different points of the day, you're unaware of it.

That mid-afternoon unproductive low could be based on what you just had for lunch.

Lacking energy can make you hate doing the things that you normally love.

Things that wouldn't normally bother you now become bigger issues.

A comment that you wouldn't normally hear now makes you want to argue with the person who said it.

Things going slightly wrong that normally would get sorted now all of a sudden, drive you crazy and make you want to throw stuff. (Or is that just me?)

This leads you to want to consume more rubbish food, (the stuff that put you here) to feel better and on and on it goes...

You might even beat yourself up because you've "Done it again" and you decide you're going to sort it out tomorrow.

However, like a good night's rest, a proper sleep.

When you're aware of what foods, make you feel powerful then you will know how to start the day before you wished it was over.

Now you can fill yourself up on the foods that give you energy.

Now your energy means you enjoy what you do.

The things that people say to you don't bother you at all.

So all of this stuff comes from starting your day with the idea of putting yourself in and staying in power.

Add in a training plan that helps you not only feel better but look and show up better and it's game over.

Add in a plan that does all the above and helps your golf, then all you have to do is put on a red suit and grow a beard because my friend you have Christmas.

Here's a little secret.

You don't need no hard, painful, specific diet.

Because all diets work.

The reason why they work is that they are based around a plan.

And people who get the results follow that plan like it's a treasure map, and those that follow the map, get to where they want to go.

So if you're feeling burnt out, stressed and tired.

It might just be to the food that you're consuming is causing you to feel the way you're feeling.

And rather than just filling up with foods and looking for the perfect diet.

Why not just pick a plan and stick to it.

One thing I've always loved to do is to add food I should be eating rather than worrying about what I can't eat.

It's a great place to start.

The next step is to eat for your targets in the body.

When you couple in golf-specific training it becomes far easier, to stay committed (even on your worst days) because it feels like you're eating and training to be better at a game you love.

Not for a set of scales or how you look with your shirt tucked in.

So what I would suggest is select the foods that you know you should be eating and eat more of them and find some sort of training that you can do that will empower you to get close to your targets.

The best way to do that is to pick the training that you love to do, or that will give you the results you desperately want.

So if you're not sure if Sunday football is for you.

Or getting in a gym and pumping iron is your thing.

And maybe want to do some simple bodyweight exercises that will not only make you fitter, happier, more energised and leaner but also make you hit the golf ball further.

Held Back By Spectators

The man in the arena

Was way back when I first heard this quote.

And it was powerful then.

And it is still just as powerful to me today.

The whole point of this quote is just to see how you separate yourself from those that are unwilling to do the work you're willing to do.

It's like the players in the stands and the players on the pitch.

The players that are in the stands have played the game.

The players on the pitch are playing the game, the two of them have the same frame of reference, even though they are coming from two different places, one playing one watching.

It's completely different when you take into account the spectators in the stands, that have never been players.

The man in the arena, quote, for me, signifies this more than anything else.

If you're in the stands and you've never played the game, you're more likely to criticise because you have no frame of reference.

It's no different from what I used to do, and probably would do again, when at football matches.

Having never really played the game at any high level, watching games I would criticise certain actions.

And when you watch football commentators who are ex-footballers.

Sometimes it can seem they're not as harsh on the players themselves as maybe football writers, or fans.

This could be because they have a frame of reference.

There's something in them that says, "as much as I don't agree with that. I've done that before or can see why he's done that, and if I try to explain it to you why he's done that, or why I've done it before, you will not understand, because you have no frame of reference".

So, if you are being criticised or motivated by players of the same game as you,

then that is feedback and potentially valuable feedback at that, but...

If you're being criticised by spectators, who have never played the game you're trying to play.

That is not feedback and could be criticism just for the sake of criticism.

In the GolfMob, we play a game where you focus on 4 things per day.

So they will tell you that you can't do it, or that you can't keep it up, or that it's too hard or any weak excuse to justify THEIR lack of results.

They're not players, they're spectators.

You take advice from the people that are doing what you're doing or have done what you want to do.

Taking advice from people that don't want what you want,

Wouldn't have the balls to put the work in required, and

Wouldn't make the sacrifices that you are willing to make to get what you want,

Have ZERO frame of reference and has as much value as an I.O.U note from dumb and dumber..

Here's the full quote.

And for me, that whole quote can be summed up (once you know it) in the first line and the last line.

"It's not the critic who counts,"

"those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat."
